Looking after Children is a framework for “good practice” in out-of-home care. It prompts the care team to plan and activate things parents would consider for their own children in areas of education, health, skill learning and social skills. It also acts as a 'memory' of important things for the children – e.g. favourite toy, teacher in grade 2, etc

The care team usually consists of the carer, foster care worker, DHS worker, child’s parent/s, and at times the child or young person.

The LAC framework is in 4 parts

1. First information: on arrival in care

2. Care and placement plan in place at 2 weeks or earlier

3. Review at 4 weeks (and then 6 monthly)

4. Assessment and Action records - tell who does what, with a time line or due date. For example – under health, the carer will organise a dental check by such and such a time.
