Children may have extremely varied responses to loss. Children often do not understand what has occurred, and many may believe that they are guilty or responsible for the loss. They may fear recurrence of traumatic events. These thoughts and fears may manifest in many ways.
Where possible, it is important to explore these issues, and allow the child to express their fears. Explanation of traumatic events may require sensitive handling. Sharing vital information with the child is important, and must be undertaken sensitively, and at the appropriate time.
