What is Relative Care or Kinship Care

Relative care, also known as kinship care, is the care provided by a relative, or member of a child’s social network, when a child cannot live with his or her own parents.

‘Statutory’ kinship placements occur when Child Protection intervention has occurred and the decision has been made to place a child with a relative or significant friend. This may also include an order made by the court.

‘Informal’ or ‘non-statutory’ kinship care is the term used for those arrangements when the children are cared for by relatives or significant friend without Child Protection involvement.
